Heritage Buildings
Thoughtful repairs. Traditional materials. Buildings with a future.
Your period property deserves an approach that respects what makes it special. Bear & Badger is a Wiltshire-based building and carpentry business supporting owners of heritage, listed and character properties across Wiltshire and the South West.
We bring together workshop craftsmanship, practical site experience and a personal approach to planning the work. Whether you are addressing a specific repair or preparing a wider renovation, we help turn your priorities into a clear, manageable scope.
Care for the building you already have
Older buildings are individual. Their materials, previous alterations and condition all influence the right approach. We take time to understand the existing fabric, discuss what can be retained and identify where repair or replacement needs further investigation.
Our aim is to preserve character while making the property work for the way you live. Sound existing materials, appropriate detailing and carefully planned interventions are central to that approach.
Heritage building services
Timber repairs and traditional carpentry
Timber is at the heart of our business. We can discuss repairs to existing framing, joists, lintels, wall plates and other timber elements, including localised repairs where appropriate. Structural work is developed around the required assessment and design, with the repair method and extent agreed before construction.
Windows, doors and bespoke joinery
We support repairs and joinery work for character properties, including timber windows, doors and associated details. Workshop preparation and careful fitting on site help us respond to the proportions and irregularities of an existing building.
Brickwork, lime pointing and masonry repairs
Repairing traditional masonry calls for attention to the existing brick or stone and the compatibility of the proposed materials. We can discuss localised repairs, lime pointing and associated building work as part of an agreed conservation approach.
Renovation and carefully planned alterations
For broader projects, we can help organise the building work into practical stages, coordinate agreed trades and work alongside your architect or specialist advisers. This gives you a clearer view of what needs to happen first and how later works depend on earlier repairs.
Craftsmanship with personal involvement
Our team brings together experience in workshop carpentry, site carpentry, building work and blacksmithing. Much of our timber work is prepared in our Wiltshire workshop, with the final details resolved on site. You deal with a small team that takes a direct interest in the property and the quality of the finished work.
We value clear communication as much as the craft itself: understanding your objectives, explaining the proposed scope and agreeing changes before proceeding.
How your project develops
- Share your priorities. Tell us about the property, its condition, the work you have in mind and any existing reports or drawings.
- Review the building. We agree a suitable site visit to assess the work and identify any investigations or professional input needed.
- Define the approach. Materials, repair details, responsibilities and the proposed sequence are set out for review.
- Agree scope and pricing. Your written quotation explains the work included, assumptions and any separately priced items.
- Deliver and hand over. The agreed work is carried out with care for the surrounding property and a clear completion process.
Questions property owners often ask
Can you work with my architect or conservation adviser?
Yes. We can deliver agreed building and carpentry work alongside your appointed advisers. The responsibilities for design, applications, inspections and construction are established at the outset.
Can the work be phased?
We can discuss a phased programme around the repair priorities, budget and use of the property. The sequence needs to protect completed work and allow essential repairs to happen at the right stage.
What if further problems are uncovered?
Opening up an older building can reveal conditions that were not visible initially. Any resulting change to the proposed work, cost or programme is discussed with you before proceeding.
Start a conversation about your property
Please include your postcode, the building’s age and listed status if known, the work you are considering, and your preferred timescale. Let us know if you already have drawings, surveys or an adviser involved.
